How does Fotona Fractional Laser Resurfacing work?

Fotona Fractional Laser Resurfacing uses Er:YAG laser to effectively improve skin texture and tone. The laser precisely and gently vaporizes micron-thin layers of the textured skin surface to reveal healthy, undamaged skin below. Instead of treating the entire skin surface, fractional lasers deliver precise columns of laser energy into the skin. The benefit of this is that the skin in between these columns are spared - leading to faster healing, minimised downtime and less risks.

Fotona Fractional Laser Resurfacing is precisely controlled to target the optimal depth, engaging the body’s wound-healing response to stimulate the production of new collagen and skin tissues. The result is an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, skin texture and skin tone. Fractional skin resurfacing is particularly effective for aged skin or textural concerns such as acne scars.

Effective - without the downtime

The Fotona Er:YAG laser delivers effective results for skin texture concerns with minimal side effects or complications. It is strategically designed to penetrate the skin to target mid-level skin issues. Because of this, the Er:YAG laser does not reach as deep as a CO2 laser - resulting in less downtime and discomfort. There is also less risk of developing hyperpigmentation with the Fotona Resurfacing Laser treatment compared with CO2 lasers.

Common Questions

Is this treatment suitable for me?

Fotona fractional laser resurfacing is best suited to fairer skin types who have textural concerns, mild to moderate wrinkles or other skin ageing concerns. Those with darker skin types may be more likely to experience some complications, including hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Our experienced laser specialists will do a thorough skin analysis before performing any treatment. Patients who are pregnant, breast feeding, have keloid scarring or have been on Vitamin A medications (such as Roaccutane) in the past 6 months are not suitable for laser resurfacing treatments.

Is there any downtime with Fotona fractional resurfacing?

There is a recovery period of up to a week, depending on the laser settings used and the patient’s desired outcomes. It is likely that you will experience some redness and swelling during the recovery period, followed by some crusting of the skin. However, the downtime with Fotona fractional resurfacing is significantly less compared to fully ablative lasers like CO2 lasers.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments required will depend on the skin concern being treated. A minimum of 3 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart is initially recommended. For more severe acne scarring or skin texture concerns, more treatments may be required.

What skin concerns can be treated?

Fotona Fractional Resurfacing Laser can address a wide range of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities. This treatment is suitable for refreshing the skin's appearance by stimulating collagen production and triggering the body's natural healing process.

When will I see results from Fotona Fractional Resurfacing Laser?

Some improvements may become visible after your first treatment session, but typically, the results will improve over the next few months as new collagen is formed. Full treatments results can be seen between three to six months after your recommended treatment course. This is the period of time in which your skin will be producing new collagen.
