Discover The Science Behind NAD+
NAD+ Explained
NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a coenzyme present in every living cell, involved in energy production, cellular repair and metabolism, and its levels naturally decline with age. NAD+ IV therapy is delivered in-clinic by a qualified health practitioner as part of a personalised plan. It is not a substitute for a balanced diet, sleep or medical care, is not a treatment for any medical condition, and is not suitable for everyone.

How Does NAD+ Work in the body?
NAD+ works as a helper molecule involved in many of the body's essential cellular processes. Rather than acting on one single area, it takes part in multiple pathways that help cells function, repair and respond to everyday stress.
One of its roles is supporting the enzymes involved in cellular repair, mitochondrial activity, metabolic function and the stress response. NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, which is why NAD+ has become an area of scientific interest in cellular health and ageing research.
This describes the general biology of NAD+ in the body. It is not a statement that NAD+ infusions will produce specific benefits such as increased energy or vitality — the evidence for such benefits is currently limited, especially in people without a diagnosed deficiency, and individual responses vary. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.
The Science Behind NAD+
Cells produce energy through a process known as cellular respiration. During this process, nutrients from food, such as glucose, are broken down and converted into ATP, the main energy-carrying molecule used by the body’s cells.
NAD+ plays an essential role in this energy-producing process. It exists in two closely related forms: NAD+ and NADH. NAD+ is the oxidised form, meaning it can accept electrons, while NADH is the reduced form, meaning it carries those electrons. Together, NAD+ and NADH form a redox pair, helping transfer electrons during cellular reactions that are central to energy production.
NAD+ is found in almost every living cell, including cells in the heart, brain, muscles, lungs and skin. It works closely with the mitochondria, often known as the energy centres of the cell, to help produce the energy required for normal biochemical functions. The energy generated through this process is stored as ATP and used to support cellular activity, repair and communication.
Through its connection with metabolism, NAD+ provides two important forms of cellular support. First, it assists the body in converting nutrients into usable energy. Second, it acts as a helper molecule for specific proteins involved in regulating important cellular functions, including repair, stress response and metabolic balance.
Because of these roles, NAD+ is an area of scientific interest in cellular health and ageing research. This describes the biology of NAD+ and is not a claim that NAD+ infusions produce specific health or energy benefits; the evidence for such benefits is currently limited, and individual responses vary.
What to Expect + Afterwards
What to Expect
A consultation comes first. NAD+ therapy requires a medical consultation and prescription. We'll review your health history, current medications and goals to confirm whether it's appropriate for you.
Your infusion. NAD+ is delivered as a slow IV infusion administered by our medical team. Because NAD+ is infused gradually for comfort and safety, a session can take around 1–2 hours depending on your prescribed dose.
How you might feel. Infusing slowly helps minimise temporary sensations some people notice — such as flushing, mild nausea or a feeling of tightness — which typically ease when the drip is slowed. Our team monitors you throughout.
Afterwards
Most clients return to their day straight away. Your medical team will discuss your plan, any maintenance sessions, and (if appropriate) reassessing your NAD+ levels.

Frequently Asked Questions
NAD+ is involved in several core cellular processes. By helping replenish cellular NAD+, NAD+ therapy aims to support:
- Cellular energy – NAD+ is essential to ATP production and mitochondrial function, and may help support everyday energy.
- Focus & mental clarity – NAD+ supports normal brain-cell metabolism and may help support mental clarity.
- Healthy ageing – NAD+ is involved in DNA repair and the cellular stress response, and may support a healthy ageing process.
- Recovery – may help support physical and mental recovery as part of a broader wellness plan.
- Mood & sleep balance – NAD+ is involved in regulating circadian rhythm and may help support a sense of balance.
These reflect the biological roles of NAD+ and are not guaranteed outcomes. Individual responses vary, and suitability is assessed at consultation.
Step One: consultation with our medical team to assess your suitability
Step Two: Optional NAD⁺ level home testing to establish your baseline
Step Three: Receive your personalised protocol and begin treatment in-clinic
Step Four: Reassess NAD⁺ levels post-cycle and review progress with your medical team
No. NAD+ treatment is not suitable for everyone.
Before treatment, a consultation is required to assess your medical history, current medications, health status and treatment goals.
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every cell. In normal cell biology it is involved in converting nutrients into energy (ATP), supporting mitochondrial function, DNA repair and the cellular stress response, and it plays a part in regulating the sleep–wake (circadian) cycle. NAD+ levels naturally decline with age, which is why NAD+ has become an area of scientific interest in cellular health and ageing research.
This describes the general biology of NAD+. It is not a statement that NAD+ infusions will produce specific health, energy, cognitive or anti-ageing benefits — the evidence for such benefits is currently limited, especially in people without a diagnosed deficiency, and individual responses vary. Suitability is assessed at your consultation.
NAD+ infusions at BalaBala Laser Clinic are provided only after an individual assessment by a qualified health practitioner, and require a prescription. NAD+ infusions are not a substitute for a balanced diet, sleep or medical care, and are not a treatment for any medical condition. They are not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
There is currently limited scientific evidence that NAD+ infusions provide general health, energy, cognitive or anti-ageing benefits in people who do not have a diagnosed deficiency or medical need, and we cannot guarantee any particular result — individual responses vary.
As with any procedure that involves inserting a needle into a vein, NAD+ infusions carry some risks, including discomfort, bruising or swelling at the site and, less commonly, infection or reaction. Some people may experience temporary sensations during the infusion, which the rate of infusion is adjusted to manage. Your practitioner will discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternatives with you at your consultation.
