PicoSure laser is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment that dramatically improves the appearance, tone and texture of the skin. It is an effective treatment for treating pigmentation concerns such as hyperpigmentation, sun spots and age spots. PicoSure’s 755nm wavelength combined with picosecond technology are what sets this treatment apart from other laser treatments.

How does PicoSure work?

PicoSure laser treats pigmentation by delivering ultrashort picosend pulses to the skin.  These ultra short pulses penetrate deep into the skin to shatter tiny pigment particles, without burning the surrounding tissue. These broken down pigment particles are then naturally metabolised by the body. A picosecond is a unit of time that is trillionths of a second – much faster than other laser machines that operate in nanoseconds. For context, a picosecond is 100 times shorter than a nanosecond, meaning that PicoSure can deliver the laser to targeted areas faster and more effectively. The benefit of this is more effective pigmentation removal , without any damage to the surrounding tissue. It can be used on all skin types, including darker complexions (but at lower settings and multiple treatments may be required). 

What is unique about the PicoSure Laser, compared to other laser treatments?

The 755nm wavelength

The 755nm wavelength is unique due to the depth of the skin that it penetrates. This 755nm wavelength has a very high melanin absorption value, while still being gentle to the surrounding tissue by minimising thermal damage. In comparison, a 532nm wavelength has a higher melanin absorption value. However, it also has a higher risk of causing damage to the skin, such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The graph above illustrates the advantage of the PicoSure 755nm wavelength. The absorption rate of oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessels indicates the level of damage incurred to the blood vessels. At the 532nm wavelength, it is clear that the absorption of oxyhemoglobin is high – creating more damage to the blood vessels and increasing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. On the other hand, the melanin absorption of the 755nm wavelength is high, while the absorption rate of oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessels is significantly lower. To summarise, the 755nm wavelength is effective at pigmentation removal and does not cause damage to the surrounding skin.

Focus Lens Array

Picosecond technology combined with the powerful Focus Lens Array works in a similar way to a fractionated laser. It gently delivers ultra-short pulses that penetrate and break down damaged skin cell layers until smoother and healthier skin is achieved. While other treatments work by ablating and burning off the top layer of skin, PicoSure promotes collagen and elastin production by stimulating a non-traumatic tissue healing response. The Focus Lens Array has also been compared to previously used C02 lasers as it lengthens the skins elastin fibres, without the pain or downtime.

Results: What can I expect, and after how many treatments?

The number of treatments required will vary from client to client. As a general rule of thumb, we often recommend 3 sessions of PicoSure for pigmentation correction. However, some clients see desired results after just one session.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Avoid using active skincare ingredients such as retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids for a few weeks before your treatment.

During the treatment

A numbing cream is applied prior to the treatment to minimise any discomfort. Discomfort is minimal due to the ultra short pulses that allow the laser to treat your skin in a gentle and efficient manner. Some of our clients have compared it to having a rubber band flick against their skin. Treatment time will vary from client to client, but generally takes around 60 minutes. This includes the application of numbing cream, the laser treatment and a calming mask. 

After treatment – managing downtime

There is little to no downtime after a Picosure laser treatment. Clients can return to their daily activities after a PicoSure laser treatment. However, mild redness may appear for up to a few hours after the treatment. For those with sensitive skin types, redness may persist for up to a few days. 

Avoid Active Skincare Ingredients

After the treatment, it is recommended that clients refrain from using active ingredients in their skincare routine (such as retinoids, chemical exfoliants etc). 

Ensure Sun Protection

As you may experience redness after your treatment, it is important to minimise any further irritation to the skin. It is recommended to apply sunscreen if going outside and minimise direct sun exposure. The greater your exposure to the sun, the greater your risk of increased skin pigmentation. 

Stay Hydrated

To help speed up the healing process, moisturise your face with a hydrating moisturiser. It is also recommended to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
